The trench will need to extend to about 300mm below foundation level. The existing plaster needs to be removed and once the wall has dried out (there are products that accelerate this process), needs to be re-plastered with a plaster mix containing a waterproofing compound. Once the plaster is dry a waterproofing material is applied to the wall. Two types of products can be used; either a heat-applied bitumen based product, or a cold applied self-adhesive butyl based sealing product applied with a roller. Both products require two coats of a bitumen based primer coat. As an extra precaution (and since there is little extra cost) the trench can be lined with plastic sheeting once the wall has been waterproofed. An agricultural drain needs to be placed 300mm below the slab as close to the wall as possible. This allows water to drain away to below the slab level before being carried away. An agricultural drain is basically a 110mm slotted pipe that is covered with stone and wrapped in bidum cloth, which filters the soil from the water. The trench must be backfilled with river sand so as not to damage the waterproofing on the walls.
